Top Tips For Beginner Lash Artists

In this blog post, I want to share the top tricks and tips crucial to my growth as a lash artist.

Whether you're just starting or looking to refine your skills, these insights will guide you in the right direction. Join me as I take you through my journey of essential practices that can elevate your artistry to new heights.

Beauty trends come and go and techniques evolve at a rapid pace, finding my path as a lash artist was both exhilarating and challenging. My journey in the lash industry has been a blend of creativity, dedication, and continuous learning. Each client I’ve worked with has enhanced my skills and deepened my passion for lashing.

In 2021, I vividly remember the day I purchased my first attachment tweezer and isolation tweezer. I felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty as I embarked on my journey to become the lash artist I am today. Whenever I had a break in my schedule, I would seek advice from my lash educator on how to improve as a lash artist. Through countless hours of practice, trial, and error, and invaluable lessons, I have discovered tips and tricks that have transformed my work and helped me build a successful lash career.

1. Invest in Quality Lash Tools and Supplies

No lash product is built the same! It matters where you get your lash supplies. High-quality lash supplies can actually make your life so much easier. Over the years, I've learned that by investing in a good pair of tweezers and adhesive, my timing improved, and my retention spoke for itself.

Your tools are an extension of your skills, and using high-quality products can significantly impact your work. High-quality tweezers, lash adhesives, and lashes are worth the investment. Choosing supplies from reputable brands will ensure safety and effectiveness. Remember, the right tools can elevate your technique and the satisfaction of your clients. As a beginner lash artist, I loved using classic lashes on every client. It allowed me to work on speed at attachment at the same time. You can’t go wrong with a classic set!

Ensure your lash products are safe and suitable for your clients. This way, you minimize the risk of allergic reactions and other complications, building trust and a positive reputation among your clientele. As you build your clientele, you’ll learn what works for each person, and eventually, you’ll be able to apply that knowledge to new clients.

Bonus: Under Eyepads matter! You do not want to compromise your hard work with a patch that won’t stay put. Using an eye patch that stays where you put it allows for better attachment and improvement in speed.

2. Master the Basics: Classic Lashes

Wait to dive into advanced techniques! Mastering any skill takes time, and with time, you’ll see that practice makes perfect. It’s important not to dive so deep into advanced techniques because you don’t want to make a mistake that could affect your client. For example, you want to master classic sets before volume so you don’t jeopardize your client’s natural lash health.

Perfecting the fundamentals is crucial before diving into advanced techniques. Focus on mastering isolation, adhesive application, and proper lash placement. Start with classic lash sets to build a solid foundation before progressing to volume or hybrid styles. Consider enrolling in a reputable lash extension course to refine your skills and gain confidence.

A strong foundation in basic techniques is crucial before moving on to more advanced styles. The basics of lash extension application include proper isolation of natural lashes, correct adhesive usage, and accurate lash placement. Isolation ensures that each extension is applied to a single natural lash, preventing sticking and promoting healthy lash growth. Proper adhesive usage involves applying the right amount of adhesive to ensure the extensions stay in place without causing damage to the natural lashes. Accurate lash placement is essential for creating a natural and aesthetically pleasing look. By mastering these basic techniques, you lay the groundwork for more complex and creative lash styles.

Focus on mastering the fundamental eye looks. Natural eye, doll eye, open eye, and wispy. Understanding the different eye shapes and how to enhance them with proper mapping can truly elevate your skills and set you apart from others. Building a solid foundation in the basics allows you to make room for more complex designs in the future. Practice, patience, and attention to detail are key so take time to hone in on your skills and you’ll be thriving in no time.

3. Create a Comfortable Workspace

I can’t stress how important it is to have a place for everything and everything in its place. You don’t want to be a frantic lash artist looking around their messy work station. Clients’ pay attention to things like that and in most cases it’s a reason not to book with you again.

Ensure your area is well-lit and ergonomically arranged. Use a comfortable lash bed or recliner for your clients, and select a supportive chair for yourself. Keeping your tools organized and within easy reach will streamline your process and enhance your efficiency.

Both you and your clients need a comfortable environment for the best experience and precision. A well-lit workspace allows you to see clearly and work with accuracy. Ergonomic arrangements prevent strain and fatigue, allowing you to work comfortably for extended periods. A comfortable lash bed or recliner ensures your clients can relax during the procedure, enhancing their overall experience. Make sure you have a supportive chair to maintain good posture and prevent discomfort during long appointments.

Make sure you use what works for you and your skill level. If you aren’t fast enough to use adhesive trays or stickers, use a glue ring instead. It allows you to move quicker without risk of the adhesive curing.

Additionally, a clean and tidy workspace reflects your professionalism and attention to detail, making a positive impression on your clients.

 4. Communicate with Lash Clients

Do not be scared to ask your clients for feedback. Let them know you are still learning and growing every day. You’d be surprised how many clients have stuck with me over the years despite the retention issues they've experienced.

Effective communication with your clients can make all the difference. Conduct thorough consultations to understand their preferences and any potential allergies. Provide detailed aftercare instructions to help them maintain their extensions. Encourage questions and feedback to ensure client satisfaction and build lasting relationships.

Understanding your clients' needs and educating them on aftercare can lead to better results and client satisfaction. Each client has unique preferences and expectations, making it essential to conduct thorough consultations before starting the procedure. During the consultation, discuss the desired lash style, length, and curl, and identify any potential allergies or sensitivities. By understanding your clients' needs, you can tailor your approach and deliver personalized results.

5. Provide detailed aftercare instructions

Many clients believe we are trying to make a quick sale regarding aftercare. Let’s face it: Lash extensions are pretty costly, and now a client has to spend another $28-$30 on a cleanser. The best advice I’ve ever gotten is showing your client a picture in real time of all the buildup on their lash line. This usually evokes a surprised response and a need for a solution.

Aftercare instructions are crucial for prolonging the life of the extensions and maintaining their natural lash health. Educate your clients on how to care for their lashes, including avoiding oil-based products, not rubbing their eyes, and scheduling regular refills.
