LASH EXTENSIONS 101: PREP FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT & MAXIMIZE RESULTS

Whether you’re already getting your lashes done, thinking about it, or have an upcoming appointment - we have some tips to ensure you’ve prepped for your lash appointment, to the best of your ability, to optimize retention and the final look of your lashes. From avoiding makeup to choosing the right lash cleanser, these lash extension appointment tips will ensure your extensions last as long as possible and look their best. Let’s dive into everything you need to know before you hit the lash bed!

START WITH COMFORT

Your lash appointment will take approximately 1.5 - 4 hours, depending on which style you’re going for and if this appointment is for the initial full set or a fill to maintain the look of your lash extensions. So dressing comfortably is one of the simplest yet most overlooked lash extension appointment tips. Opt for loose, cozy clothing (think: a soft sweater or joggers) and avoid tight necklines or bulky accessories. The more relaxed you are, the steadier your artist can work, ensuring precise placement and a relaxing experience.

TIP: Skip the ponytail or bun - your head should rest flat. This will be more comfortable for you and your lash artist as well. Gently tuck your hair to the left or right side, whichever side your lash artist does not keep their lash tray with their lash adhesive. This will avoid a potential oopsie moment!

DITCH THE CONTACTS

Wondering why how to prep for lash extensions includes removing your contacts? Here’s the breakdown:

Adhesive fumes: The lash adhesive used, which is a cyanoacrylate-based adhesive, releases mild vapours throughout the appointment. Certain factors determine the level of fumes, such as the adhesive formula, humidity, and ventilation. If your eyes flutter and open (even slightly!), contacts can trap these fumes against your cornea, causing irritation.

Dryness: Similar to sleeping at night with your contacts - lying still with your eyes closed for hours dries out lenses, leading to discomfort mid-appointment. Since contacts already reduce oxygen flow to the eye, this can make the dryness worse.

It’s strongly recommended to either wear glasses to your lash appointments or remove contacts beforehand, and bring a case to take them out onsite.

SKIP MAKEUP AND THE LASH CURLER

Arrive makeup-free:

This is one of the most crucial lash extension appointment tips! Even tiny traces of mascara, eyeliner, concealer, or eyeshadow can create a barrier between your natural lashes and the lash adhesive, weakening the bond. Ideally, you’ll want to avoid makeup on the day of your lash appointment. However, if you must wear makeup that day, it’s best to remove your makeup before your lash appointment.

Avoid the lash curler:

Uneven lash base - lash extensions adhere best to lashes in their natural direction (keep in mind, you can always correct the direction using the extension). Curling them beforehand changes their natural shape, making it harder for the extension to bond properly.

Weakened natural lashes - mechanical eyelash curlers put pressure on the lash, potentially weakening or stressing the natural lashes. This can lead to breakage or cause them to be in a compromised state when extensions are applied.

Issues with the bond - if the lashes are curled, the bonding area for the extension is reduced, leading to poor retention and a higher chance of premature shedding.

CLEANSE WITH CĒANA

Your prep should include a thorough cleanse with a lash shampoo/cleanser, either at home or at the beginning of your lash appointment with the lash artist. Introducing - Cēana, our oil-free, sulfate-free cleanser designed for your lashes and your face. Here’s why it’s a game-changer for the lash industry:

BRING HEADPHONES AND MINIMIZE CHATTING

While we lash artists love connecting with clients and catching up on day-to-day life, keep the conversation to a minimum once your lash artist starts applying the lash extensions, this will ensure movement and distraction will also be kept to a minimum - resulting in beautiful lashes, full coverage, no discomfort to the eye area (due to adhesive fumes), and sometimes even a quicker lash appointment. Here’s why:

Adhesive Safety: If you talk, your eyelids may flutter unconsciously, allowing fumes from the adhesive to irritate your eyes. In some cases, this can trigger redness or a stinging sensation.

Precision Matters: Even slight facial movements (like laughing or nodding) disrupt your lash artist’s focus. Keeping as still as possible ensures each extension is isolated and bonded correctly, preventing stickies or unevenness.

Faster Results: Fewer distractions mean your artist can maintain their workflow rhythm. Quiet clients often leave a bit earlier than scheduled with the same flawless coverage.

If you have a hard time taking a nap during your lash appointments, pop in headphones and listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook!

Avoid caffeine: It can make your eyes flutter and increase the number of bathroom breaks.

Arrive early: It’s better to be a bit early than a bit late! Even if it’s only 10-15 minutes, you’d be shocked at how many extensions can be applied in that time.

Discuss allergies: Mention sensitivities to adhesives, skincare ingredients, etc, to your lash artist both during the initial consultation as well as if a new allergy or sensitivity arises down the line.

Avoid drinking before your appointment: Fewer bathroom breaks during your appointment means more time spent on applying lashes.

Hold off on chewing gum: You may not notice, but even chewing can cause your face (specifically your eyes) to move. If you’re chewing gum during your appointment, it will be difficult for your lash artist to ensure proper isolation, direction, attachment, etc.

By following these lash extension appointment tips, you’ll have a relaxing appointment, maximize retention, help ensure full coverage, and more. Ready for a lash nap? Your dream lashes are just a session away!
